This fun mud run takes you on a 5K loop up, over, through, and around SCC's West Burlington campus with plenty of obstacles along the way.
Climb a hay tower, scale a climbing wall, tackle a tire ladder, crawl in the mud, and bring your friends to snap those mud covered selfies.
Plenty of hoses, high-fives, and fun involved. Proceeds support SCC student clubs and organizations.

Q. What is the Dirty Hawk 5K?
A. The Dirty Hawk 5K is a mud run and off-road obstacle course at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa.
Q. Will I get wet/dirty/muddy?
A. Yes. The DH5K course runs through and around farm fields. How dirty or muddy you get will be largely dependent on the weather. Please prepare accordingly.
Q. Do I have to sign a waiver?
A. Yes. Like all challenge races, the DH5K has a waiver that you’ll need to sign before you can step foot in the mud.
Q. How do I get there?
A. Southeastern Community College is located at 1500 West Agency Road in West Burlington, IA. From Highway 61 (Roosevelt Avenue) turn West on Agency Road. From Highway 34, take the exit 260 (Gear Avenue) and turn south. Once on campus, watch for the signs.
Q. Where & when is packet pick up?
A. Packet pick up will be at the Agri-Stock Arena on SCC’s West Burlington campus from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening and on race day starting at 8:30. Follow the signs.
Q. Can I register on race day?
A. Yes. However you may not get a race shirt.
Q. Where do I park?
A. There is plenty of free parking available onsite. Follow the signs.
Q: Can I bring spectators?
A: Yes! Bring your cheering section! Spectators will be able to access a number of the obstacles along the course without getting muddy (as long as it’s not too rainy ahead of time). And of course, they’re welcome to greet you at the finish line.
Q. What if it rains? Can I get a refund?
A. We'll have the race rain or shine. Sorry, no refunds.
Q. What can I expect on race day?
A. A dirty-fun time, a race shirt, and a goodie bag. The first 200 race finishers will receive a finisher's medal. Note: last-minute racers are not guaranteed a shirt.
Q. Will there be water stations?
A. Yes. We will have water at select locations on the course.
Q. What about the obstacles?
A. We’re glad you asked! Racers will climb a wall, hay bales, fences, and a tire tower. You’ll also tackle a mudslide and encounter other surprises along the way.
Q. How difficult is the course?
A. The obstacles will be a challenge, but the average person should be able to complete the course. Our goal is for you to have fun, not have a heart attack. See an obstacle that is a bit too daunting? No problem. Just go around it and move on.
Q. When should I arrive?
A. Like any race, it’s best if you arrive 30 minutes prior to your race start time to give yourself plenty of time to park, hit the rest room and make your way to the starting line.
Q. Will the race be timed?
A. No. The object is to have fun and complete the race. However, you are welcome to time yourself. There are no prizes for fastest finisher. You are welcome to go as fast or as slow as you like.
Q: Will there be food available the finish line?
A: Racers will enjoy standard post-race snacks - fruit, cookies, water.
Q. Why the different start times?
A. In order to keep the race running smoothly and avoid long lines at the obstacles, racers will start in heats every 15 minutes. We will do our best to honor your requested start time. However, we may split up larger groups and send participants out every 15 minutes according to number of racers.
Q. Will there be showers available after the race?
A. Sort of. We will have an enclosed area where you can spray yourself down. The water will not be heated.
Q. Will someone be taking pictures?
A. Yes. There will be several people along the course snapping photos. All photos will be available for viewing and download for free on SCC's flickr page.
Q. Can I wear a costume?
A. Yes. That would be awesome.
Q. How does the team registration work?
A. You must have 4 or more racers to qualify as a team. You must send in all registration forms at once to ensure that you get team discount. Give yourself a fun team name and include it on the registration form.
Q. Is the DH5K pet friendly?
A. We love pets, but they’re not allowed on the course.
Q. Who is behind the Dirty Hawk 5K?
A. The Dirty Hawk 5K is a concept brought to life by a group of individual staff, faculty and students at Southeastern Community College.
