Course Description: Supervised travel and living experience in an ecology field trip. Adequate preparation as judged by the instructor is required for credit participation. Specific written credit and participation requirements are established in advance of the field study. Each hour of credit requires a minimum of 54 hours of supervised travel and living experience.

Outside Reading: Havasupai Habitat by Alfred Whiting

A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson

(Copies will be placed on reserve in the SCC Library).

Grading System: Students will be on a contract for grades:

‘C’ Grade: Complete a participant observation journal on Field Study.

‘B’ Grade: Complete requirements for ‘C’ grade and write a book report relating SCI-922 Ecology Field Study experiences to one of the outside readings listed above.

‘A’ Grade: Complete requirements for ‘B’ grade and conduct an original presentation relating SCI-922 Ecology Field Study experiences to one of the outside readings listed above.

Course Outline (for students earning 3 credits): Tentative Schedule

March 05, 2007: Attend lecture: "The Principles of Ecology and SCI-922 Ecology Field Study".

March 16, 2007: Submit a written book report of one of the outside readings listed above.

March 16-24, 2007: Attend meetings as required and make journal entries of related trip activities.

March 24, 2007: Journals are due by 8:30 a.m.

April 6, 2007: Presentations are due. Time and place pending.
